In-Home Pet Euthanasia: A Compassionate Approach to Saying Goodbye

The process:

The process of in-home euthanasia is never rushed, and since it is taking place in your home it can be personalized to meet your needs and address any concerns you may have. The most important thing is that everything is done in a manner that is as stress-free for your pet as possible and that helps you feel as at peace with the process as possible. End-of-life planning is not easy and Dr. Dolian will be respectful throughout the process.

When we start, we will find a place of your choosing that will be a comfortable end-of-life spot for your pet. Once you are ready, medications are given that will help your pet to feel comfortable, sleepy, and relaxed. Some of the medications will also help to take away any pain or discomfort they may have so that they can feel relaxed and at ease. The medications will take several minutes to take effect and your pet will not feel any discomfort while this is happening. This is a good time to give your pet their favorite foods like a cookie, ice cream, peanut butter sandwich, or even a special treat form a dog bakery (some will make rainbow cakes for the appointment). If your pet is no longer eating, we can give them affection and comfort with our words and physical touch.

Once they are fully anesthetized, meaning they are no longer aware of anything around them and are no longer feeling any physical sensations, and you are ready, a final injection will be administered to allow them to pass away peacefully. They will not feel any pain with this injection as they are under a state of anesthesia similar to what is used for a surgical procedure.

You and whomever you choose can be with your pet for as much or as little of this process as you wish. If your pet has a favorite blanket, bed, or toy we can keep it with them for the process and even send it with them if you wish.

Things to consider:

If you wish to perform the euthanasia services with children present we can absolutely do so. Please let us know if this is what you wish to do so that any concerns or considerations can be discussed before the appointment.

If you would like other pets to be present they can be there during the process and allowed to see the body after the euthanasia has been performed. Please bear in mind that some pets can show remarkable compassion for the loss of their companion while others may show no respect for the patient during the process or after.

If you wish to perform the home euthanasia outside, please have a contingency plan in case the weather does not cooperate. Please bear in mind that if the location for end-of-life is in an area where the public has access, Dr. Dolian may not be able to provide the level of privacy you wish.

After Care:

There are several options for pet owners regarding the aftercare of their beloved pets. You may wish to make these arrangements yourself or Dr. Dolian can take care of them for you. If you would prefer for her to make the arrangements you would choose the cremation option that is best for you and Dr. Dolian would take your pet with her at the end of life. Please rest assured that she will handle your pet with dignity and care throughout the process. There are several options for cremation and a clay paw print can be made as well. Please see our aftercare page for more information. If you wish to bury your pet on your property, please refer to your county and city ordinances about requirements for burial after home euthanasia medication has been administered. Please also consider contacting your local utilities to ensure that you do not dig where there are any underground cables.

The Importance of In-Home Pet Euthanasia

In-home pet euthanasia provides a compassionate alternative to traditional veterinary clinic euthanasia. It allows pets to be surrounded by their familiar environment, minimizing stress and anxiety for both the pet and the owner. Being able to say goodbye at home brings comfort and peace during an incredibly difficult time. Dr. Dolian knows first hand what it is like to go through this process. She will provide you and your pet with compassion and care, helping to support you through this difficult process.

Understanding the Process

Preparing for the Procedure

Before scheduling in-home pet euthanasia, it's crucial to have open and honest conversations with your veterinarian. They will guide you through the process, answer your questions, and address any concerns you may have. It's important to ensure that all family members are mentally prepared for the procedure as much as they can be. Our veterinarian will also answer any of your questions before the appointment or when they arrive at your home before the euthanasia.

The Role of Dr. Dolian

Dr. Dolian has more than 10 years of experience, she will perform the euthanasia procedure in your home. She will discuss the process, explain what to expect, and ensure that the pet's comfort is prioritized. Dr. Dolian will bring what is needed to perform a peaceful transition for your beloved companion.

The Euthanasia Process

During the euthanasia process, Dr. Dolian will administer a gentle sedative and to ensure your pet is relaxed this medication will also help to ease any pain your pet may be in. Once the sedative takes effect, she will administer an anesthetic medication that induces a deep sleep where your pet will no longer feel any pain or discomfort. Once your pet is asleep and will no longer be aware of any sensations a final injection will be administered allowing them to pass away peacefully in their sleep. The entire procedure is handled with utmost care and compassion and you will be informed about what is being done at every step.

Compassionate Care in Familiar Surroundings

Reducing Pet Anxiety

Pets often experience anxiety when visiting a veterinary clinic whether it is from previous experiences at a clinic or the unfamiliar surroundings and the presence of other animals. In a clinic setting pets are often taken away from their owners for an intravenous catheter to be placed which can be uncomfortable and stressful for the pet and the owner. In-home pet euthanasia eliminates these stressors, allowing the pet to remain with their owners for the entire process, calm and relaxed in the comfort of their own home. An intravenous catheter is not placed while a pet is awake during an in home euthanasia with our service. Our approach helps to provide a more peaceful transition for the beloved companion.

Comfort for the Pet Owner

Being able to say goodbye in the familiar setting of one's home provides immense comfort to pet owners. It allows them to grieve privately, surrounded by memories and the beloved pet's favorite spots. It also eliminates the stressful drive to the clinic with your pet and driving home without them.

Aftercare and Support

Handling the Remains

This can be determined ahead of time when the appointment is scheduled or when Dr. Dolian arrives at your home. Some pet owners choose to have their pet cremated, while others prefer burial. Dr. Dolian can provide guidance and support in making this decision.

Grieving and Coping

Losing a pet is a profound loss that triggers a range of emotions. It's important to acknowledge and honor these feelings while seeking support from loved ones, friends, or support groups specializing in pet loss. Sharing stories, creating a memorial, or seeking professional counseling can help with the grieving process and provide comfort during this challenging time.

Remember, the loss of a pet is a deeply emotional journey, and it's essential to seek support, give yourself time to grieve, and honor the memories and love you shared with your beloved pet.
